How to Point Your Domain to AWS Lightsail: A Step-by-Step Guide

Before we begin, you need:
  • A domain and its DNS account access
  • An AWS Lightsail instance

Step-by-Step Guide


Assigning a Static IP

  • Log in to your AWS Lightsail account.
  • Navigate to the Networking tab.
  • Assign a static IP to your Lightsail instance to ensure it doesn't change when you reboot the server.

Configuring DNS Settings

  • Copy the static IP assigned to your Lightsail instance.
  • Log in to your Domains account.
  • Navigate to the DNS management zone.

Adding DNS Records

Add an A record
  • Name: @
  • Type: A
  • TTL: 10 minutes
  • Data: [Your Static IP]
Add another A record
  • Name: www
  • Type: A
  • TTL: 10 minutes
  • Data: [Your Static IP]

Verify Your Domain

  • Wait for the DNS changes to propagate (this can take from 1 minute to 24 hours).
  • Check if your domain is pointing to the Lightsail instance by entering your domain in a browser.
